About Kylych — 15 years guiding the Tien Shan
I'm a native of Issyk-Kul, and I've spent more than 15 years guiding eco, adventure and hunting tours across the Tien Shan. This is who I am and how I work.
Who is Kylych?
I'm Kylych, a guide born and raised on the shore of the lake I grew up on, in the Tien Shan mountains of Kyrgyzstan. For more than 15 years these mountains have been my work: leading travelers on foot, on horseback and on skis, and running regulated hunting expeditions in season. What I know comes from living here year-round, not from a seasonal contract — the lake, the passes and the jailoo pastures are home first and a workplace second.
PLACEHOLDER: owner to confirm — the personal story: where exactly I grew up, how I started guiding, and the trips that shaped how I work today. Owner interview needed for specifics; nothing here is invented.

Why does a local guide beat an agency here?
Because in Kyrgyzstan the details decide the trip. Which jailoo the shepherds have moved up to this month. Which pass is still holding snow in June, and which one opens early. Which yurt camp is actually on the shore this summer and which moved a valley over. An office selling Kyrgyzstan from abroad works from a fixed itinerary written once a year; I work from what the mountains are doing the week you arrive, and I can change the plan with you on the trail when conditions — or your legs — say so.
It is also simpler on your side. You know exactly who is responsible for your trip, because it is the same person from the first message to the last day: me.
What experience stands behind the tours?
Fifteen-plus years of guiding across the categories this site sells — each one is a trip I lead personally:
- Horse trekking — multi-day rides to Song-Kul and along the south shore of Issyk-Kul, the trip I am known for.
- Adventure trekking — guided treks from Karakol — Ala-Kul, Ak-Suu, the Jyrgalan valley — with support that lets you walk light.
- Winter / ski touring — ski touring and freeride around Karakol and Jyrgalan in the December–March season.
- Cultural & Silk Road — Tash Rabat, Burana, and time with the eagle hunters and yurt makers I work with on the south shore.
- Eco tours — low-impact nature travel — Sary-Chelek, Song-Kul, and the summer pastures above the lake.
- Regulated hunting expeditions — licensed, permit-based trips run within the official seasons. Listed here for completeness; the details live on their own page.
What those years actually buy you is judgment. Knowing how a group moves at 3,500 m and when to slow it down. Knowing which side of a valley holds the path after rain. Knowing the difference between a guest who needs encouragement and one who needs a shorter day. Routes can be copied from a map; that part cannot.
What safety standards do we follow?
The unglamorous kind that actually works. Groups stay small, so nobody gets rushed or left behind. We acclimatize properly before sleeping high — altitude is the one risk in these mountains that punishes impatience. I make honest weather calls, which sometimes means telling you a pass is not on this week and offering a better plan instead. And on the road we use drivers I know personally, in vehicles I have ridden in myself. More on the practical side — money, SIM cards, road sense — is in safety, money & staying connected.
PLACEHOLDER: owner to confirm specifics — first-aid training and certifications, insurance arrangements, and rescue/emergency contacts. None of these are claimed until confirmed.
Which languages do we speak, and who do we travel with?
PLACEHOLDER: owner to confirm — the languages I guide in. This site is published in English, Russian, Chinese and Spanish, but that says nothing about the languages spoken on tour; this section will list only what I can confirm.
As for who travels with me: most trips are private — couples, families, small groups of friends — and solo travelers are welcome. If you would rather join others than travel alone, say so in your message and we will look at what is possible in your dates.
How do you plan a trip with me?
Directly. There is no booking engine and no deposit funnel on this site. You message me — WhatsApp is fastest — with your rough dates and the kind of trip you have in mind. I come back with questions, then a tailored program with route, pacing and costs. When it looks right to both of us, we fix the dates. That is the whole process.
